Gorgeous Granville
Granville Island is a major tourist attraction in downtown Vancouver. It's located on False Creek and has a market, many restaurants and pubs, loads of local arts and crafts, and a waterfront where you can while the day away. I gather it used to be a location for foundries and machine shops and some reminders of that past can still be seen in various displays in the area. Today Granville Island is chockful of artists' studios - potters, weavers, textile artists, printers, cobbler and jewellery makers.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to GI last Sunday. Some of the things that stand out in my mind...The magician dazzling a crowd of kids...
...The amazing indoor public market with all manner of fresh produce and artisanal delights. What to see first? What to take home, what to simply sniff and ohh-and-ahh over? In the end, I bought a bottle of piri-piri and a pack of couscous from an Asian supplies store, which I had hoped would carry some harissa. We had lunch in the market too. H had a delicious burger (rating: 7 out of 10) and lemon meringue pie, I had vegetarian pad thai, V a French onion soup and AJ, a hotdog bun.
...On the Aquabus, we saw birds wheeling overhead with fat fish caught in their beaks. Airborne lunch!
...Skeins and balls of fine yarns and yards of beautiful silks at the textiles shops. Beautiful arts and crafts produced by First Nations artists, and a workshop (?) showing some totem poles...
The houseboats were too cute for school. The mailboxes were darling.
There was so much to see for one day that I think I will go back a few more times to really absorb all the sights and sounds. This will be a fantastic place to revisit in high summer. Just imagine the sunshine flooding the streets and everybody in shorts and tanks and sandals, just enjoying a beautiful day.
My new home offers many, many such days.
